Dr. Margaret Filbert has more than 57 years experience in development of medical countermeasures for chemical warfare agents.  She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology in 1947 and Master of Science Degree in Physiology in1949 from the University of Maryland, College Park.  Her professional career began in 1950 at Edgewood Arsenal as a physiologist in the Clinical Research Branch of the Biomedical Research Laboratory (BMRL). In 1979, the BMRL was transferred to the US Army Medical Research and Development Command, now the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command   In 1981, the BMRL was renamed US Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense (MRICD).

In 1978, she was awarded a Long-Term Civilian Training Fellowship.  This training led to her receiving the Ph.D. degree in Biological Sciences from University of Maryland, Baltimore County.  She served as Chief of the Neurotoxicology Branch, Pathophysiology Division, MRICD from 1995-1997.  In 1998 she was appointed Chief Research Operations Division (ROD) of MRICD.  While serving as Chief of ROD, Dr. Filbert has maintained a small research effort in collaboration with Dr. Gerald Ballough, Professor of Biology, La Salle, Philadelphia PA.  Together they have demonstrated efficacy of several neuroprotectant compounds against nerve agent-induced, seizure-related brain damage.  Dr. Filbert was instrumental in establishing the on-line Journal of Medical Chemical Defense the scope of which was expanded to include Biological and Radiological defense and is now the Journal of Medical Chemical, Biological and Radiological Defense.   Currently, Dr. Filbert is Special Projects Officer for MRICD and is assigned to the institute command group.
