Dr. Peter Gray graduated from LaTrobe Univesity in 1974 with a First Class honours degree in biochemistry, for which the D.M. Myers University medal was awarded. He holds a PhD in biochemistry from LaTrobe University. The subject of the thesis was the interaction of anticancer drugs with DNA.
Dr. Gray commenced with Defence Science and Technology Organisation in 1980 working on the toxicology of chemical warfare agents. He conducted research into the basic mechanisms of action of and methods of protecting against chemical warfare agents and has published work in the toxicology of both nerve agents and sulphur mustard.
Dr. Gray’s role is to manage the Biological Countermeasures Group. This group provides scientific and technical support to the Australian Defence Force on all aspects of biomedical defence against chemical and biological warfare agents. The Group is a multidisciplinary team working on sulphur mustard toxicology, rapid diagnosis (real-time PCR); vaccine development (DNA vaccines) and recombinant antibody technologies. The program includes collaborative activities with a number of other Australian and overseas laboratories.
