Sergey V. Netesov, PhD, DSci, Prof

Dr. Netesov is an expert in the field of virology with extensive research into hepatitis and influenza. He holds degrees in Chemistry from Novosibirsk State University and Moscow State University, and in Molecular Biology from the Institute of virology of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. He is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, member of the Russian Society of Epidemiologists, microbiologists and Parasitologists, Russian Society of Biotechnology, European Society for Clinical Virology, American Society for Virology, American Biosafety Association, and the European Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Netesov is a Professor in molecular virology and Vice Rector (Research) of the Novosibirsk State University. He has published close to 140 papers, has presented at more than 100 conferences and is the winner of many Russian and International grants. He is also a winner of two Russian government awards (in 1997 and 2005).

Dr. Netesov was the Deputy Director General for Research at the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology “Vector,” the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-being of Russian Ministry of Public Health and Social Development until 2007. He continues at Vector as Head of Laboratory of Molecular Biology of RNA viruses.

Recent activities include:

  • Leader of the reverse genetics project on the VEE virus reconstruction from cDNA fragments and the development of a recombinant vaccine for VEE virus.

  • He led the projects sequencing some Russian strains of tick-borne encephalitis and influenza viruses and has focused on the molecular diversity and molecular epidemiology of the viral hepatitis in Siberia.

  • His other focus is bioterrorism prevention.
